about

"Personent hodie (instrumental)"

This snippet is from a Gustav Holst arrangement of a 13th c. Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book "Piae Cantiones," a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts collected by Jaakko Suomalainen, a Swedish Lutheran cleric, and published by T.P. Rutha. I'm including a verse's worth of it as the opening processional (instrumental) and the closing recessional (with Latin lyrics vocal of the final verse) as parentheses for my Noël 2013 set. It is a stirring bit of music that never fails to stir up memories of singing it in high holiday spirits with the Harvard Memorial Church choir every Christmastime. Synth sounds include: church organ, warm and regular trumpets, and tinkle bells near the end.
