about

"Veni, Emmanuel"

13th c. plainsong with 9th c. Latin lyrics, better known as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." Keyboard is in reed organ mode, both for the octave F sustained through the 1st & 2nd verses and for the full arrangement behind the 3rd verse. At around 90-seconds, listeners will hear a non-lyric vocal interlude (singing "ooooh") against a recorder harmony. Anyone familiar with Joan Baez' incandescent "Noël" album (arr. by the wonderful Peter Schikele) may be surprised if recalling this section is not from her version of this same tune on the LP but, instead, it's lifted from her/Schickele's version of Niles' "I Wonder As I Wander." Works quite well for this piece, too, I think!
